Inspirational Lady

It's Danielle Steel's birthday today. I have lots of admiration for the lady. I'm not necessarily a huge fan of all of her writing, I am a huge fan of the woman. She's accomplished so much and attained astonishing success via loads of perspiration and hard work, working from 12 to 16 hours days while raising nine children (!)

I came across a series of quotes and facts about her that I thought I would share:

A little known fact about Danielle is that she penned her first novel, Going Home, in just three months. Pocket Books published the book in 1973. Her endeavor earned her $3,500. She's come a long way.

In between that first published book and the rest of her successful books, there was disappointment. Danielle Steel's next five books, plus a screenplay were rejected by publishers. Another little known fact about her is that, in order to make ends meet financially, she taught creative writing classes at University High in San Francisco. Fortunately, Steel didn't have to teach long. Her second novel, Passion 's Promise, was published in 1977.

Here are some quotes:
  • I'm astonished by my success.
  • I try to write about the stuff that torments us all.
  • I completed my first novel when I was 19 years old.
  • It's hard being visible, so I've made myself invisible.
  • If you see the magic in a fairy tale, you can face the future.
  • I have these wonderful homes, and no one to share them with.
  • I think I'm very real as a person, and that comes across in my work.
  • I try to give people hope. Even though life is bleak, there's hope out there.
  • My early reviews were so bad that I decided I didn't want to read them again.
  • A book begins with an image or character or situation that I care about deeply.
  • In my late teenage years, I developed a real passion for it, and wrote a lot of poetry.
  • People are much more inclined to believe and say bad things about you if you're famous.
  • My kids are more precious to me than anything. I'm with them all day, and I write all night.
  • I wrote because I needed to and wanted to. It never occurred to me that I'd become famous.
  • A bad review is like baking a cake with all the best ingredients and having someone sit on it.
  • I've shut myself inside these walls, and I'm going to be a very lonely old lady if I'm not careful.
  • I did it at night because I loved it. I never did it to make money, as a job. I just did it because I had to.
  • It's difficult to talk to people... I walk into a room and I'm Danielle Steel, and whatever I say is going to be taken apart.
  • Sometimes, if you aren't sure about something, you have to just jump off the bridge and grow wings on your way down.
  • I like summer. I like warmer weather and long days. I'm one of those silly people who still enjoy lying in the sun - my children are horrified!
  • The usual way - through a long series of rejections, revising my manuscripts, and kept trying again and again. Finally I was fortunate enough to find a good agent.

Happy Birthday Danielle!

Happy Monday!!!

Happy Monday! I hope you enjoyed a fantastic weekend!!

I was fortunate to spend an entire day at the stunning Spa Balnéa, a lovely gift received for Christmas. The grounds are absolutely breathtaking and the treatments are of exceptional quality.

I also took a four hour hike in the mountains on Sunday which was great to clear my head for another busy week.

I'm working on a new exciting project at the moment ( in addition to a novel) and I can't wait to tall you more about in the upcoming months...

Speaking of writing, I am sharing a short story written by my virtual friend Jennifer DaikerWhen Love Aligns.

It's the story about what you do when you match the love of your life to someone else and I encourage you to take a peek at her witty writing style!

Have a fantastic week!

A dream writing cabin

I've been spending time in the country to finish my second novel; nature inspires me in so many ways. Something I dream about is having a tiny cabin, where I can take refuge in the woods to write. Like this tiny jewel I found on House of Turquoise. It belongs to Canadian photographer Stacey Haines' family in Nova Scotia. You can read about it here. What are you dreaming about these days?

Don't miss out on the two giveaways below!

Happy Friday!!!

Happy Friday! Hope you had a fantastic week! Brrrrrr, it's chilly today! Hope the warm weather and sunshine will be back soon!

The weather was so spectacular mid-week, not sure what happened...

I will be working on the manuscript again today...Things are moving along quite nicely...

I wish I looked this fabulous when writing...Perhaps I will make an effort to get a bit dressed up today, who knows it might bring some additional inspiration! I just love these gorgeous pictures taken from the most recent edition of Matchbook.

If you want to see the stunning makeover of a tiny Paris apartment, I recommend you take a look here.

Thank you to Houzz.com for asking me to participate in an exciting project! More on that later...

Have a great day!

My dream: an apartment in Paris

Ever since my return from an amazing ten day stay in one of the most beautiful places in the world, I dream of escaping to the City of Light to write...and I can't help but try to imagine how my space would be decorated...

I think that the bedroom would look a bit like this:

With a tiny nook for entertaining...

It would have a cozy reading corner...

I would have a small terrace overlooking a quiet courtyard...

A few items picked up at the local flea markets...

It would have stunning architectural details...

I would find a large antique armoire to keep all my precious vintage dresses and shoes...
it would be located in the 6ième arrondissement...

And, of course, there would be lots of touches of pink!

with some lovely French notebooks to write my ideas and inspirational thoughts in...

And a few cute pups!

There's nothing wrong with dreaming a bit, non?

What is YOUR dream? Please share!

Reflections on an amazing year

As 2010 comes to an end, I am now reflecting on this past year. It was an amazing one in many respects. I was fortunate to see my first novel, J'Adore New York,  published in three languages by three major publishers.  I am truly grateful for everyone's amazing support and would like to thank all of you who read my work, encouraged and supported me throughout this project. I have made many new friends this year, including some incredible bloggers, loyal readers, book reviewers, fellow writers and book sales associates. Some of you even brought tears to my eyes ( many times!) and if you are reading this, you know who you are!

However, for those of you who may not be aware, this book took me four years to complete and I literally poured every bit of my soul, energy and blood into it. Looking back now,it feels it was totally worth every effort. For aspiring writers that
have a manuscript hidden somewhere along with a dream of seeing your work published, I say never give up.

I persisted for years despite receiving countless rejection letters from literary agents and publishers.  All I can say is that you should listen your intuition; it will pay off, believe me. If you want more details about my arduous path, you can read an essay I wrote about it here.

I am also grateful for the loved ones and good friends in my life who bring me enormous joy.

In reflecting on this past year, I have also given some thought on what changes I'd like to make to this blog and, one of my resolutions is to post a bit more about myself, including my writing and maybe even add personal picture ( or two!)

I wish you a very happy 2011, filled with joy, creativity, health and love.

And remember to never stop pursuing your precious dreams.

Polka Dot Cottage: a writer's dream spot

How adorable is this upstate New York cottage? Isn't it is just dreamy with its colorful lanterns and vintage furniture, I could totally see myself escaping here:  sleeping in the sister cottage at the back of the property, hiding away writing my next novel and enjoying refreshing breaks by swimming in the nearby lake.....Okay enough with the dreaming, back to the writing....
